Graphic developed by Ivonne Peña, showing the feed-in tariff or FIT (fixed price paid per MWh generated to wind power producers) mechanism in Portugal. The FIT policies were established back in 1988, with a very early vision of the role of renewables in supporting power generation. Portugal has proved to be a leading country in the deployment of renewable energy (RE) and their successful integration with very few interruptions due to the high RE penetration. But FITs are an old-fashioned policy mechanism, because they do not encourage competition and might result in high private profits. Thus, a more flexible FIT scheme, with innovative policy design should be on its way in Portugal to fully and directly incorporate the advantages of renewable power in the electricity market.
